Güliz Gürel is a visual artist and scientist working between London and Abu Dhabi. She holds a PhD in Biophysical Chemistry from Yale University. Her work explores how light, orientation and time shape the way we perceive and inhabit the world.

Drawing on digital compositing and hand painting, she often begins with places and systems she knows closely. Some works draw on Islamic structures such as qibla, prayer cycles and tawaf; others look at how living systems respond to light and changing time. 

Across her practice, Gürel draws on ways of thinking developed through both science and art, observation and experimentation, to make otherwise unseen patterns visible. Digital tools and selective hand painting help her trace these structures and bring patterns of alignment and repetition into view.
